Donegalia.com is a brand new search engine created and based in Donegal, which filters and blocks content that is unsuitable for children.
The new project is the brainchild of local entrepreneur, Jimmy McCarthy, who decided to create the search engine after numerous parents talked with him about how worried they were over their children’s internet browsing.
As a father of three, and a member of the Board of Management at his local school, Mr McCarthy was all too aware of the dangers of the internet, and decided to tackle the issue head on.
With a background in Web-design and website building spanning some 13 years, Mr McCarthy was well equipped to tackle the challenge:
“The main reason I wanted to do this, was because parents were always telling me that their children were more tech-savvy than them, and that they were able to view grossly inappropriate material through the computer.
On the Television, there’s more control over what your kids watch, and of course, TVs are much easier and user friendly to moderate. So I decided to make a user friendly ‘Family’ based search engine.”
The idea for the search engine is for families to set it as their Homepage on their laptops and PCs, so that the first thing people see when they go on-line is Donegalia.com. This then means that any searches that might bring up any inappropriate material, such as pornography, are automatically blocked from appearing.
The project has received lots of positive feedback from impressed parents who have tried the site, and things look set to get bigger and better!
Donegalia.com uses Google 'Safe-Search' technology and Analytics, but most importantly is easier, and more user-friendly than its competitors, as all of the filters and technical procedures are already set up.
Donegalia.com is live now and all are encouraged to check it out!
