Letterkenny Music & Drama Group are delighted to be presenting the spectacular smash hit Broadway and West-End musical Legally Blonde, from Tuesday, November 27 – Saturday, December 1, nightly at 8pm in An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny.
Originally premiering on Broadway in 2007, Legally Blonde the Musical is based on the 2001 novel by Amanda Brown, which was later adapted into a popular 2001 film starring Reece Witherspoon.
It received seven Tony Award nominations and 10 Drama Desk nominations in the US and after opening in London in 2009, Legally Blonde the Musical won seven awards: three Laurence Olivier Awards including Best New Musical and four Whatsonstage.com Awards including Best New Musical and Best Choreographer.
Legally Blonde is the award-winning sensation that took the West End and Broadway by storm. Some reviews read as follows:
…PERFECTION. Ridiculously enjoyable from start to finish.' The Independent
**** ‘Musical Theatre at its best - great songs, witty lines. Smart, sassy, spectacular.'
The show features great songs like “ Omigod You guys,” “Positive. “Ireland,” “Whipped into Shape” and fast-moving breath-taking choreography and lots of humour.
Legally Blonde is the well-known story of sorority president Elle Woods (Maire O’ Donnell) who crosses The US and enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner (Eoin Callaghan).
She discovers how her knowledge of the law can help others, and successfully defends exercise queen Brooke Wyndham[ Andrea Logue] in a murder trial.
Throughout the show, no one has faith in Elle Woods, but she manages to surprise them when she defies expectations while staying true to herself.
Elle uses her new-found skills to defy the odds and prove that pink really can save the day!
Directed by the ever-reliable Pluincead O'Fearraigh, he will be joined in this production by Denise Roper as Musical Director with Tina Drein as Choreographer in what promises to be a highly enjoyable production packed full of energy and high-octane music and dancing.
As Pluincéad is keen to stress: “All theatre is meant to take you to another, sometimes more glamorous world. It’s a form of escapism.
“Legally Blonde does this but also has a very valid point – it challenges the way people make assumptions based on appearance only.
“Elle Woods, the central character, appears to be the ditsy, beautiful, bubbly blonde who follows her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law in an attempt to win him back, after he dumps her for someone more 'serious'.
“In Elle’s attempt then to become more “serious” she realizes she has her own interests and intelligence and is a very capable formidable person in her own right.”
Since 1991, Letterkenny Music & Drama Group have always staged memorable musical, comedic and dramatic productions of the highest standard on the local stage, most recently staging the smash hit musicals Sister Act and Hairspray to sold out shows.
They also reached the All Ireland Open Drama Finals in Athlone in 2015 and again earlier this year with the newly written Kieran Kelly play Beneath an Irish Sky.
They also enjoyed great success in 2012 winning The All Ireland Confined Finals and Ulster Finals with their hilarious production of The 39 Steps.
