As the visitors arrive to see Ireland’s fascinating Wild Atlantic Way, a key part of which is in Donegal, another Atlantic related Donegal attraction is setting up its shows.
This is the model railway show season arranged by Donegal Railway Heritage Centre starting next week firstly in Lifford and then in Burtonport.
The shows began around working models of the County Donegal Railway stations but then added 1930s working Hornby models and displays of Meccano and Dinky Toys – fascinating for children and a big attraction for some of the adult enthusiasts.
Now in their seventh year of shows the big 1930s electric Hornby layout has become a huge attraction and gives us the link with the Atlantic. One of the favourite 1930s locos is a 4-4-2 tank engine, which is an Atlantic wheel arrangement, together with Hornby’s 1937 Princess tender loco, both of which will be running at the shows.
All comers, whether local or visitors, are invited to the forthcoming shows and the programme is: The Old Court House, Lifford this coming Wednesday July 16 and Thursday July 17, 12 noon-5pm both days; Burtonport, St Columba’s Community Centre, Saturday, July 19 10am-5pm and Sunday, July 20 11am- 4pm; The Old Station, Donegal Town, Saturday 16/ Sunday July 17 August, 12 noon-5pm both days and the Bundoran Retail Park, Station Road, Saturday, August 23/Sunday August 24, 12 noon-5pm both days.
