The small, rural community of Leghowney was delighted to be visited by not one but two government ministers.

Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring TD was in the county last week visiting projects supported by his department. Among these was the playground at Leghowney Hall near Donegal Town which received funding under the CLÁR Programme.

Minister Ring accompanied by Minister Joe McHugh TD and local councillors visited Leghowney Hall last Friday. They met many local families and were treated to a welcome cup of tea in Leghowney Hall.

Mary Canavan on behalf of the local community thanked Minister Ring for allocating funding. She spoke of the high number of children in the community and the decision to build a playground.

Mrs Canavan also thanked local councillor Tom Conaghan for pointing them in the direction of CLÁR funding.

“We would have been fundraising for a long time without it,” she said. “So thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.”

Minister Ring said: “This is all about community spirit. Here today you can see the spirit and you can feel the spirit. Many people in bigger cities would love to be living in a place like this.”

Minister McHugh said: “The first thing that struck me when I arrived here was the number of young people. It is a great community. I am privileged to be here and it is an absolute pleasure to have Michael Ring here. He knows the same impact of the waves and of the storms as we do in Donegal. He is always willing to fund small communities and small projects.”

Before heading home to Mayo, Minister Ring took time to speak individually to the many people gathered to greet him.

His tour of funded projects in Donegal also took in Letterkenny, Dunfanaghy, Glenveagh Castle and Glenties.

During his visit to the county, Minister Ring announced that he had allocated funding for a wheelchair accessible vehicle for the community in Derrybeg through the CLÁR Programme.
