Donegal county champions Gaoth Dobhair had a good work out against a Donegal Select in a special match for cancer sufferer Owen McConnell (pictured above) who is undergoing treatment in New York.

It finished:

Gaoth Dobhair 4-7

Donegal Select 1-12

In excess of 1,000 patrons from all over Donegal attended the game in Ardara on Saturday evening.

A howling wind made good football at a premium but there were some good scores from both sides.

Three first half goals was the firm platform for the winners.

The Select came back strongly in the final quarter and made it a three point game when a point from Sean Gorrell, one of several substitutes had the score line at 4-5 to 1-11.

But two late points from Niall Friel and Gavin Sweeney saw the county champions prevail by 4-7 to 1-12.

Speaking afterwards, Gaoth Dobhair Secretary Eamon McBride said it was a good workout for the county champions. “It was a good work out and we used a lot of players and I am sure they got a good run-out as well," he said.
