Gardai in Letterkenny have confirmed that 90 people were arrested over the weekend which coincided with the Donegal International Rally.

Inspector Michael Harrison revealed that there were 42 people arrested for public order offences, and 25 for drink driving offences.

Four people were arrested for drink driving at one checkpoint just outside Letterkenny.

Among the other arrests were 17 for dangerous driving.

It is expected that up to 35 people will be before Letterkenny District Court today in relation to incidents over the weekend.

The town was thronged with large crowds over rally weekend.

The busiest night for the gardai was on Saturday.

Inspector Harrison told Highland Radio that the number of arrests was up on last year.

He added that there were no major incidents, but commented on the large volumes of alcohol being consumed by some people - and the consequent knock-on affect for public order.
