The Community Games was established in Dublin in 1968 to cater specifically for children and later year celebrated its golden 50-year jubilee.
When the Community Games organisation was founded, Donegal entered the athletics section of the competition.
The event was held in Santry, Co Dublin, and the late Ben O'Donnell, from Lifford, was the Donegal team manager.
In 1972, it was decided to enter a number of events and Ballybofey’s Patsy McGonagle, who later became a member of the Irish Olympic Committee, was secretary for Donegal.
The Community Games have since gone from strength to strength.
