John Speer from Ramelton, Co Donegal was recognised for the quality of the milk produced on his farm and was awarded the Best Performing Donegal Supplier at the recent Aurivo Milk Quality Awards. John was one of eight winners from seven counties who were recognised for their excellence in milk production at the annual Aurivo Milk Quality Awards. Now in its seventh year, the Aurivo Milk Quality Awards identifies and rewards Aurivo milk suppliers who exemplify excellence in milk quality.

John milks 190 Holstein-Friesian cows on his Ramelton farm. Cow numbers expanded rapidly and they are currently milked through a 20-unit parlour. Milk temperature is reduced rapidly with the aid of a plate cooler resulting in low TBCs. SCC levels are also low, with above average solid percentages. Automatic cluster removers ensure cows are milked consistently and not over-milked. This, John has also attributed to his reduction in cell count. As the grazing platform is limited, cows are buffer fed for a good part of the year with silage and meal.
