Donegal County Council is being urged to seek funding to do a pilot programme to give all fishermen life jackets fitted with Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB).

It follows the drowning of two fishermen off Malin Head in July.

The bodies of Gerry Doherty (68) and his nephew Thomas Weir (16), pictured, were recovered four hours after their small fishing boat capsized.

A third man, Dessie Keenan, a relative of the two victims, managed to survive when he clung on to a fishing buoy for almost four hours.

In a motion to be put before Donegal County Council on Monday next, Inishowen-based Cllr Martin McDermott will call on the Council to make contact with the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund and to avail of European funding to do a pilot
programme in Donegal to give all fishermen life jackets fitted with EPIRB.
