As midnight approaches in the Donegal Town count centre, six candidates are still in the running for four seats.
The second seat in the Municipal District (MD) of Donegal has been filled by Cllr Noel Jordan (SF) who retains his place on the council after being elected on the twelfth count. He joins Cllr Niamh Kennedy (Ind) who was elected in the previous count.
Returning Officer Pauric Sheerin declared Noel Jordan's surplus too low to distribute. This is because it was smaller than the difference between the votes of the two candidates in last and second last place. The surplus could not therefore impact on the outcome of the election.
Because the surplus could not be distributed, Billy Grimes who had the fewest votes was eliminated.
As it stands Micheal Naughton (FF) is on 1,661; Micheal McMahon (SF) is on 1,478; John McNulty (FG) is on 1,453; Barry Sweeney (FG) is on 1,432; Tom Conaghan (Ind) is on 1,397; Seamus Maguire (Ind) is on 1,176.
The thirteenth count is now underway.
