After a long day at the Donegal EA count centre, Niamh Kennedy (Ind) needs only a dozen votes to see her take a seat in the next council.

After topping the poll, she has been edging ever closer to the quota with each successive count. And with Bruckless man John Boyle (FF) now eliminated, she is certain to pick up a significant number of votes from his 1,001 transfers.

In total, nine candidates are still vying for the six seats of the Municipal District (MD) of Donegal.

Noel Jordan (SF) is only 170 votes off the quota and he too could well take a seat after the next count.

Also still in the running are Micheal Naughton (FF) on 1,612; Michael McMahon (SF) 1,470; Barry Sweeny on 1,376; Tom Conaghan (Ind) 1,272; John McNulty (FG) on 1,214; Seamus Maguire (Ind) 1,106; and Billy Grimes (Ind) 1,057.
