Dr Bev Huss is best known to the people of Donegal Town as a family GP and wife to Archdeacon Ven David Huss.
But she is also an enthusiastic and highly skilled water-sportswoman. This led her to being invited to take part in a huge fundraising event in Dublin recently.
Now in its second year, Dragons At The Docks is a corporate dragon boat Regatta held in Dublin’s Grand Canal Dock. Money raised goes to Dublin Simon Community, with other charities operating in the Grand Canal Dock area also benefitting.
Nine of Ireland’s biggest property companies enter teams, with more that 800 people taking part. Most of the money raised comes from the entry fee and from sponsorship. There are also bucket collections and novelty events on the day.
Dr Huss qualified as a dragon boat race helm earlier this year. When asked if she could help with Dragons At the Docks, the Donegal GP was happy to oblige.
She told the Donegal Post: “It was a privilege to be part of such a worthy event.”
Money raised so far has exceeded the target of €250,000.
CEO of Dublin Simon Community said: “Utilising funds raised at Dragons at the Docks, Dublin Simon Community plan to acquire five apartments for individuals and couples.
“Working together, we have the ability to deliver many more permanent homes, ensuring that people never have to face the uncertainty and anxiety of homelessness again. On behalf of Dublin Simon Community and most importantly the people who rely on our services, thank you for helping to rebuild lives.”
Dr Huss will be back in Dublin this Saturday with her own club, the Donegal Dragons. Members are taking part n the annual Hong Kong Dublin Regatta. This is the biggest dragon boat Regatta in Ireland, attracting teams from all over the world. The club has been taking part for the last four years. This will however be the first time that Donegal Dragons has entered two teams, thanks to an ever increasing membership.
And with their very capable GP at the helm, they aim to put in a strong, competitive day's racing.
