It has been confirmed that Donegal’s islands will go to the polls one day in advance of the mainland in the European and Local elections.

Voters on the Donegal islands, Arranmore, Tory, Gola, Inisboffin, and Inishfree which have a total electorate of 753, will be casting their votes on Thursday May 22nd, while the rest of the county will vote on Friday May 23rd.

Voting is held in advance on the islands in case of bad weather, which may delay the journey of the ballot boxes to the count centre.

On polling day, all papers will be placed in the same ballot box, and on Saturday May 24th all ballot boxes will be brought to the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny, where votes will be segregated and verified.

The European votes will be sent to the count centre in Castlebar. Votes cast in the local elections will be transferred to the individual count centres in the five electoral areas.
