Donegal Youth Musical Theatre (DYMT) is a county-wide musical theatre company for people from 7 to 21 years of age.
Founded in January 2017, DYMT offers young people from all across the North-West a chance to experience the first hand the musical theatre industry. This is done through their annual Summer Youth Production and the Musical Theatre Stage School.
Last year saw DYMT’s inaugural production and sell-out run of the North-West premier of the West-End hit, Phantom of the Opera, in An Grianan Theatre, Letterkenny. The production was met with incredible reviews, both locally and nationally, as Donegal was instilled as a hub of musical theatre excellence.
“… Visually stunning… a Feast for the eyes… as good as any vocals you would find in the West-End…” (AIMS Review of DYMT’s Phantom of the Opera).
In September of 2017, DYMT then launched their new Musical Theatre Stage School. This gives members space to enhance their talents and enrich their love of arts through acting, singing and dance training. The school encourages the participation of students of all levels and abilities. At present it provides training to more than 80 young people from all corners of the county.
Hallmark to DYMT's success is the professional environment that the team provide for their students. A key approach is to offer 'West End opportunities' here in our own county. This is done through mentors, coaches and musicians from across Ireland and beyond.
Acting tuition is under DYMT Director, and Director of Trinity Musical Theatre, Séimí Campbell, along with Sinead O’Donnell Carey from the Abbey Theatre, Dublin.
The North-West’s well regarded Musical Director Herta Kelly provides musical tuition. She does so along with vocal coach Therese Campbell who works one-on-one with students on vocal technique.
Musical Theatre’s Amy Jordan and ballet extraordinaire Deirdre Forristal form the DYMT Choreography team. The many visiting artists such as international vocal coach Tine Verbeke provide regular masterclasses at Stage School.
Enrolment for the next two terms of Stage School is now open, with lessons then resuming on Saturday 13th January in Donegal Town. Anyone who wishes to book a place can do via email at [email protected] They can also send a DM on Facebook @DonegalYouthMusicalTheatre.
While Stage School resumes this weekend, there is of course much anticipation ahead of the announcement of this summer’s musical production.
Not giving too much away as of yet, DYMT Director, Séimí Campbell, told us: “We will be making the exciting announcement in the next few weeks, with auditions to held across the north west in April … All I can say for now is that it is going to be a big name!"
If last year's production is anything to go by, it will without doubt be another stand out show.
