Letterkenny Town Council held its last full meeting last night (Monday).
Local government in the town dates back to 1899.
Several councillors expressed their sadness at the decision to abolish town councils.
And there was concern expressed that the town will be worse off without having its own council which had a budget of around €9 million per annum.
Following the local elections in May, the work previously done by the town council will be administered by an enlarged county council.
