Pat 'the Cope' Gallagher, Fianna Fáil, and Marian Harkin, Ind., will be battling it out to fill the fourth and final seat in the European elections for the Midlands North West.

Sinn Féin's Matt Carthy secured the third seat with 7,911 transfers from the eliminated Fianna Fáil candidate Thomas Byrne.

Carthy's surplus of 5,756 will now be divided between Pat 'the Cope' Gallagher and Marian Harkin. However, Harkin has a 2,586 lead on MEP Gallagher.

Outgoing MEP Gallagher had stated earlier today that he was still 'hopeful' of gaining a seat.

Fine Gael's Mairead McGuinness secured the second seat earlier today, while Ind. Luke 'Ming' Flanagan won the first seat yesterday.
