Fianna Fáil has held its selection convention to decide who will be co-opted onto Donegal Co. Council to succeed the late Cllr. Sean McEniff, who passed away in April.
Laghey-based Sligoman Michael Naughton was selected.
Three other candidates - Elizabeth McIntyre ( a daughter of the late councillor), Ballyshannon based Billy Grimes, and Roger Meehan from Dunkineely - had expressed an interest in the position.
It is understood that 200 out of 214 members voted.
Michael Naughton is no stranger to local politics and unsuccessfully contested the 2014 local elections when he stood in the Donegal Municipal District.
A manager at the Clanree Hotel in Letterkenny, he has long been involved in Fianna Fáil and is also well known in GAA circles, not least for his success as manager of the Donegal senior ladies gaelic football team.
It is expected that he will be officially co-opted onto Donegal Co. Council later this month.
