Management at Letterkenny University Hospital have urged people not to come to the hospital unless it is an emergency.
Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) is the second most overcrowded hospital in the state today, according to the latest INMO figures.
A spokesperson for LUH said: "The Emergency Department at Letterkenny University Hospital is very busy today, Tuesday 08 January. We have admitted a lot of seriously ill patients recently, many of whom remain in the ED, awaiting a bed.
"We apologise for the distress or inconvenience caused to patients or their loved ones who are experiencing long wait times.
"We are committed to treating everyone who presents at our ED but we do so strictly in order of medical priority.
"We would like to remind the public that we encourage them to attend the Emergency Department only in the case of real emergencies and they should contact their GP or GP Out-of-Hours service in the first instance.
"This is a challenging time for our hospital but thanks to the huge efforts of our frontline staff patients are continuing to receive safe care during this period."
