The national housing waiting list crisis has hit Donegal.
Latest figures show that there are 2,146 applicants on Donegal Co. Council's housing waiting list.
This represents a massive leap of 28% on the previous year.
And the outlook appears bleak with only a handful of new council houses being built in most areas.
Efforts to utilise vacant properties are likely to be increased in the coming months and the Government has announced that it is determine to tackle the problem
Social justice campaigner Fr. Peter McVerry has warned that Ireland is facing a "tsunami of homelessness" as rising rents, housing shortages and home repossessions continue to rise, notably in Dublin.
