A major battle looks likely tomorrow for the final seats in the Letterkenny Electoral Area.

According to the latest tall figures, Cllr. Ciaran Brogan will top the poll as expected in this seven seater.

It is expected that there will not be much between his Fianna Fáil running mate Donal Coyle, Independent Michael McBride and Fine Gael's Cllr. Jimmy Kavanagh behind Cllr. Brogan.

Former Mayor Gerry McGonagle (SF) is under pressure to retain his seat while his party colleague Adrian Glackin is also battling to retain his seat. Sinn Féin will be under pressure to retain two seats.

Independent Kevin Bradley looks well placed to take a seat.

Fianna Fáil's Manus Kelly, Fine Gael's Bernie Moran, and the two Sinn Féin candidates will be fighting for the last two seats.

And Aontú's Mary T. Sweeney could yet figure, depending on transfers.

However, a number of boxes were not tallied - and had over 300 votes between them which could be significant.

The order in which lower placed candidates drop out will have a big bearing on the final outcome, with geographical factors being important.

The official count takes place tomorrow, starting at 9.00 pm.
