Home helps provide a vital service within local communities.

Local election candidate in the Glenties area Anthony Molloy (FF) is calling on the government to do more to ensure their continuation. He is also calling for an increase in funding for the vital home help programme.

Mr Molloy said: "One of the great success stories of the Irish health service has been the home help programme. Without doubt the wonderful people working as home helps are extending the lives of so many elderly people in every town, village and rural area in our county.

“Their contribution cannot be quantified or questioned but many of our home helps are under time constraints which directly impacts the time they spend helping the patients. The government needs to loosen the red tape around time spent with patients. Home helps are keeping our already overcrowded hospitals from overflowing; they are a vital cog in the health system and to that end need the pay and respect they deserve.”
