Donegal Tourism’s Love Donegal Day was a resounding success.

Economic Development Administrative Officer with Donegal County Council Barney McLaughlin was very pleased with the impact of the campaign.

He told councillors at the September meeting of the Municipal District (MD) of Donegal that #LoveDonegal trended at number one in Ireland from 6.00am to 9.50pm on August 14. A phenomenal 28.5 million people were reached during the campaign.

“It was a very successful enterprise,” he said. “There are a lot of people out there who love Donegal.”

The campaign was run across all social media platforms with a particular focus on Twitter. Promotion began on August 1, encouraging people to post their favourite Donegal pictures on August 14 using #LoveDonegal.

The total number of interactions was 833,336, most of which came through Twitter.

“It went beyond the expectations of the team that were working on it,” said Mr McLaughlin. “This wasn’t done by one person, it was a great team effort.”

The promotion also brought new contacts for businesses. Mr McLaughlin said this was worth more than €31,500 in terms of what would need to be spent on advertising to achieve the same results.
