Yesterday we reported that Mairia Cahill, the woman from Belfast who went public about her abuse at the hands of a prominent IRA man, has joined the Labour party and will contest Jimmy Harte's Seanad seat in the coming election.
She was nominated by Labour leader Joan Burton and Minister Alan Kelly and Senator Lorraine Higgins believes that Cahill will make "a very fine parliamentarian" and that she will be a Senator on merit.
She said, "I'm particularly delighted to learn that Mairia Cahill will contest the Seanad by election for the Labour Party. She is bright, able, determined and will make a huge contribution in national politics. What struck me about her from the very first moment that I met her was her resolve, courage and tenacity in the face of such adversity. Her inner strength in exposing her abuser and standing up to the online bullies who sought to silence her is quite simply inspirational.
