A Buncrana-based fundraising group has announced plans for one of its most large scale and ambitious events to date.

The ‘Relay for Crumlin’ organisation will hold ‘All Roads Lead to Buncrana’ in June, which will see a total of 13 running, bike and swimming races take place in the one day.

The various races will have starting points at a number of areas throughout Inishowen, with all the running events ending up at the town’s Market Square.

The event, which was launched at the Inishowen Gateway hotel on Saturday, has already attracted several entrants, and organisers are urging anyone who wants to take part to get their training started now.

Mickey Bradley from Relay for Crumlin told the Inish Times: “We would ask people to visit our Facebook page and get themselves registered before the end of February.

“You think June is a long way away, but it will be here before you know it so it’s best to start thinking about getting in shape now.

“None of the events are races as such. It’s a community thing, and once each group starts off there’s always a lot of banter and craic. The taking part is the most important thing.”

The swim will be go from Rathmullan to Buncrana pier, the cycling event from Restex in Letterkenny to Restex in Buncrana, while 11 running races of varying distances will launch from points such as Clonmany, Tooban, Carn, Muff and Bridgend.

Said Mickey: “We’re really looking forward to it, and hopefully there should be a good buzz about the town on the day.

“The support we’ve had from the local business community has been fantastic. We put it out there on Facebook what we planned to do and that we wanted a sponsor for each race, and within four days we had the majority of them all sorted.

“At the moment we’re hitting the 200 mark with entrants, so we’ve made the end of February the cut-off to give us a chance to get tee-shirts and all the rest of it organised.”

And the group are hoping to be able to make a sizeable contribution to Crumlin Hospital’s Children’s Medical and Research Foundation at the end of it all.

Said Mickey: “I’ve been involved in fundraising for Crumlin for around the last 20 years. One of their mottos is ‘every sick child deserves a chance’ and that idea is at the heart of what we do.

“There are lots of youngsters from Inishowen who have attended, and are still attending, Crumlin.

“Every little bit raised helps them and helps their parents, and it’s nice that we can do something to support such a great cause.”

The group are also planning to hold a fundraising run for Crumlin, tailored for children and families, over the Easter weekend.

Called ‘Little Heroes for Superheroes’, it will be held at Buncrana’s shorefront, and the kids taking part are being encouraged to come in fancy dress.

Said Mickey: “We’ve been round all the schools to let them know about it, so hopefully that event will also go well.”
