Public opinion is being canvassed on the merits of holding a Star Wars Festival in Malin Head.
The event, with the working title: ‘May The 4TH Be with You Festival 2019” is the brainchild of the recently established Explore Inishowen CLG, Inishowen’s new tourism promotion company.
Following their busy first season, Explore Inishowen CLG has recognised a not-to-be-missed opportunity to host a Star Wars Festival in Malin Head, in collaboration with Failte Ireland and local community representatives.
A similar festival was successfully rolled out last year in County Kerry, supported by Failte Ireland.
Explore Inishowen CLG has welcomed an opportunity to work with Failte Ireland on extending the festival offering; an additional resource in the promotional offering for the Star Wars fan up here in the Northwest.
Star Wars is a multi-billion euro industry, having built a massive fan base for more than four decades.
The potential plan would be to hold this festival event in 2019, to coincide with the international ‘May the Fourth’ celebrations, when Star Wars fans around the globe celebrate one of the biggest movie franchises in history.
Heidi Doherty, Programme Manager of Explore Inishowen said: “Explore Inishowen CLG is extremely excited at the possibility of working cohesively with the other bookend film location in Ireland and collaborating with Failte Ireland planning this event.
“It would be a fantastic opportunity and benefit all concerned in the community. Potentially hosting a “May the Fourth Festival” would mark the iconic links between Star Wars; two major sites being in Malin Head, County Donegal and Skellig Michael in County Kerry.
“Similarly, it should be a festival which everyone in Inishowen can participate in and enjoy. As such, we are encouraging the public to come to our information evening, hear what our plans are to date, and have your say on what you would like to see.
“Preparing for an event such as this is both a huge opportunity not to be missed and it is vital that the local community be consulted and allowed to have their say on the events which will take place. The potential to promote Inishowen within the Star Wars fan base market cannot be underestimated. These festivals are a global phenomenon and attract Star Wars fans from all over the globe,” said Ms Doherty.
“The meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 11, at 7pm in the Malin Head Community Centre and everyone is welcome to attend.
Explore Inishowen CLG are requesting all tourism providers to attend a meeting at the Malin Head Community Centre too.
