Ciaran and Danielle McKenna owners of McKenna's Centra, Buncrana who won the Best Community Initiative Award at the prestigious ShelfLife C-Store Awards 2018.

An Inishowen husband and wife business team have scooped a coveted award at the prestigious ShelfLife C-Store Awards 2018.

Ciaran and Danielle McKenna, who own McKenna’s Centra in Buncrana won the Best Community Initiative Award in the face of stiff competition from six other stores.

Speaking to the Inish Times following the awards ceremony on Wednesday night past, a delighted Ciaran said: “The awards took place at a black tie ball in Dublin’s City West Hotel. More than 450 retailers from across Ireland attended the event and the MC on the night was radio and television personality, Marty Whelan.

“Danielle and I were both there as our store was short listed for the Best Community Initiative  Award, together with six other stores. When we were announced we were truly shocked as it was an honour to be short listed but to win was fantastic

“When we received the award, we heard that the judges had been particularly impressed with McKenna Centra’s initiative of offering students a safe place to wait until a parent or guardian arrives, if they were stuck after school.

“Students who shop in our store are an important part of our business and are very courteous and mannerly when in-store so we are more than happy to offer them a place to stay if stuck after school and keep safe till parent guardian arrives. We employ 30 local employees who are the number one asset we possess and thrilled for them also,” said Ciaran.

ShelfLife C-Store Awards 2018. are the most comprehensive and the only independently-judged business accolades for the convenience store sector.
