Current sitting Sinn Féin Councillor Noel Jordan and former Bundoran Town Councillor Michael McMahon have officially been confirmed as the party’s picks to contest this year’s Local Elections for the Donegal Municipal District (MD).
The pair was formally selected to go forward as local election candidates after receiving the backing of Sinn Féin members at the party’s selection convention last night (Thursday).
The packed event, which was held in Donegal Town’s Central Hotel, also featured contributions from Sinn Féin activists and elected representatives, including Donegal TD Pearse Doherty and Glenties based Councillor Marie Therese Gallagher.
Speaking following last night’s convention, Cllr Noel Jordan said: “I want to begin firstly by thanking everyone for coming along tonight to attend the convention and for the phenomenal support which I’ve received both tonight and over the last number of weeks from members and supporters alike.
“I am truly honoured to have been selected, together with Michael McMahon, to contest this May’s Local Election for the party here in the Municipal District of Donegal.
“I have had the absolute privilege of representing Donegal over the last five years since I was first elected to Council back in 2014, and I have had such great support from communities throughout South Donegal throughout that time.
“It’s been such a pleasure to have had the opportunity to work alongside local groups, community organisations, business owners and constituents to help promote this region and, together, we’ve managed to deliver a number of important initiatives and projects.
“I now very much look forward to hitting the campaign trail along with my long time friend and comrade Michael McMahon and, with the continued support of the people of south Donegal, I’ve no doubt that we can return two strong Sinn Féin Councillors for the Donegal M.D.”
Also speaking after last night’s event, Michael McMahon added: “I must say a huge thank you to everyone for coming along tonight and for backing my nomination to be added to the Sinn Féin ticket to contest the 2019 Local Elections here in the Donegal Electoral Area.
“As many people will recall, I’m no stranger to public life as I’ve previously had the honour of representing local communities here for a number of year as a member of Bundoran Town Council prior to its abolition back in 2014.
“And since then, I have remained committed to community activism and helping others throughout this region to promote and develop this area.
“Over the years as a public representative, I developed a strong reputation for standing up for everyone regardless of their political ideology or background and, should I be successful in my bid to gain a seat this May, I hope to once again act as a voice for all the people of South Donegal.
“Councillor Noel Jordan has done a fantastic job over the last five years in representing the people of Donegal and together, with the backing of the people of the Donegal MD, we hope to have an even stronger Sinn Féin team elected to represent ordinary people at Council level.”
