Minister for Finance Michael Noonan has confirmed that some people who had their discretionary medical cards removed will have them reinstated.

Following Cabinet discussions, Mr. Noonan said that Minister for Health James Reilly would bring proposals to return certain cards.

The news comes despite the fact that it has been previously stated that it would not be legally possible to return the cards.

The Government has faced harsh criticism for the review process of medical cards, and there is mounting pressure for prompt action to be taken.

Pat Rabbitte, Minister for Communications, said that medical cards have always been provided on an income based means test rather than particular illnesses.

Mr. Rabbitte has stated that the matter will have to be taken care of by James Reilly, Minister for Health.
