A new nurse has been appointed to take up the post of continence care link nurse in Fahan Health Centre on January 19th.

Michelle Quinn will be one of four nurses doing the nurse led clinics in the county.

The Continence Care Service is based in Dungloe Community Hospital.

The new role of Continence Care Link Nurse was created to further develop the Continence Care Service in County Donegal.  The aim of the role is to improve the quality of life for people who are affected by bladder and/or bowel problems by providing a specialist service.

Clients will be seen in their local community at nurse led 'Healthy Bladder and Bowel Clinics' where an assessment of their problem will be completed and a treatment plan given.   If required, clients may then be referred on to either the Physiotherapy Service or the Uro-Gynaecology Service at Letterkenny General Hospital.
The role also includes raising awareness of continence problems, of the supports that are available and providing education sessions to healthcare staff, carers and voluntary groups.

Michelle qualified as a registered general nurse in Scotland in 1993 and moved to Co. Donegal in 2002.  Since then she has worked in Buncrana Community Hospital as a staff nurse and was also the Continence Care Link Nurse.  She commenced a nurse led Continence Clinic in Buncrana in 2010. She has recently completed an honours degree in Nursing Science which included further study in Continence Care, Urology and Palliative Care.

Michelle is very enthusiastic about her new role and stated “I am looking forward to commencing my new role in the Continence Care Service in Co. Donegal. My aim is to help improve the lives of people who are affected by bladder and bowel problems and also to be a support to the carers and other healthcare professionals that are involved in their care.  I realise that there are challenges within the healthcare system but I am excited to be involved in this very positive development".

The Continence careclinic locations are Dungloe, Falcarragh, Donegal Town, Killybegs, Ballyshannon, Stranorlar, Buncrana and Carndonagh.

It is planned to commence new clinics in Letterkenny and the Carrigart/Milford area in the near future.
