Call for those responsible to be brought to account

There has been widespread condemnation of the vandalism of a number of trees on the bypass in Carndonagh.

It is the second time trees in the area have been targeted by vandals.

Last July, 14 trees were cut down only to be replaced by the local Tidy Towns committee.

Four trees were destroyed in the latest incident which occurred late on Saturday night/early Sunday morning.

Condemning those responsible, Fianna Fail TD Charlie McConalogue said it was "disgraceful" for someone or a small group of people to destroy the trees "in this manner" in view of the time and effort being put in to the town to make it look "beautiful."

He added: "My thoughts are with the Tidy Town committee who will have to repair the damage. They must be very frustrated and I would appeal to anyone with information regarding the vandalism to inform the local Gardai as it is an act of vandalism against the whole community."

Sinn Fein Cllr Albert said the anger in the Carndonagh area was "palpable."

He added those responsible needed to He said those responsible had issued a "symbolic challenge" that they felt they could not "be brought to a account."

He added: "That is not acceptable. This wanton destruction and vandalism again along this beautiful walkway."

Fianna Fail Martin McDermott called on anyone with information to contact Buncrana Garda Station.

He added: "The Tidy Town group in Carndonagh have done fantastic work around the town and don’t deserve this type of sick act."
