The popular sean – nós singing competition, Corn Cuimhneacháin Éamoinn Ghráinne, took place over the weekend.

The overall winner of the competition this year was Diane Ní Channain. The competition takes place annually in memory of the late Éamonn Ghráinne Mac Ruairí (Tori Island and Falcarragh).

Bella Nic Ruairí, widow of the late Éamonn Ghráinne presented Diane with the cup along with a cheque for €150.

Other winners on the night included Niamh Ní Dhubhgháin, this year’s Donegal Rose from Tory Island, for best female singer and Colm Joe Mac Ruairí took the prize for best male singer with Daire Ó Baoill in second place.

Amy Ní Chléirigh won the prize in the under-18 category with second place going to Ailsíse Ní Bhreisleáin. The best beginner category was won by Reailtín Ní Dhochartaigh. Odhrán Mac Laifeartaigh won the prize for best singer from Cloughaneely.

The competition was held in An tSean Bheairic, Falcarragh, in front of a capacity audience. Caitríona Ní Cheannabháin was the adjudicator and Patricia Nic Ruairí McCorkell presided over the evening.

Caitríona gave high praise to all the competitors. She said it was heartening to see the singing tradition was alive and well in the Donegal Gaeltacht and applauded Patricia McCorkell for the work that she does in ensuring that the old songs are being passed along to the new generation.

She also gave praise to An tSean Bheairic for running the event to such a high standard and for the professionalism of the sound, lighting and stage. The competition has been growing in strength and stature over the last number of years, demonstrated by the participation of singers from other Gaeltacht areas in Donegal, in particular the entrants from Scoil Mhín Tine na Dé, Ailsíse Ní Bhreasláin, Amy Ní Chléirigh and Reailtín Ní Dhochartaigh, young singers mentored by last year’s winner of Corn Éamoinn Ghráinne, Naoise Mac Cathmhaoil.
