Secondary school  pupils had a lucky escape this morning after their school bus went on fire.

The fire on the bus broke out near the Thornberry Estate at the Mountain Top at around 8.30 this morning.

Pupils noticed smoke and alerted the driver.

Everyone got off the bus safely.

The emergency services were alerted and the main N56 Kilmacrennan to Letterkenny Road was closed. Traffic was diverted by Thornberry, leading to delays during the morning rush.

The pupils were from Colaiste Ailigh, Loreto Secondary School and St. Eunan's College.

Many of them walked on to school.
