An embarrassing blunder has seen Mars Ireland issue a fresh recall for batches of Galaxy Milk bars and Maltesers bags.
It was revealed today that this is "due to possible presence of salmonella".
Both products were originally recalled last summer – but two lots of the famous chocolate treats were accidentally redistributed, according to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.
The recalled products are the 42g bars of Galaxy Smooth Milk and Maltesers Fun Size bags. They are both marked “best before” May 13, 2018.
A FSAI spokesman revealed: “In June 2017, Mars Ireland recalled a range of its products due to the possible presence of salmonella.
“Two pallets of the above implicated products were on hold with an Irish distributor, awaiting destruction but were placed on the market accidentally.
“Mars Ireland is recalling the above specific batch of the 42g Galaxy Smooth Milk bar and Maltesers Fun Size bags.
“Consumption of product from the implicated batches could cause salmonellosis. Symptoms can include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever. There are no reports of illness.
“Consumers are advised not to eat the specific batches. Consumers who may have already consumed the implicated batches and are feeling unwell should seek medical advice.”
The FSAI warning did not state if the recalled products have been placed for sale in Donegal.
Mars Ireland owns several famous brands, including Mars, Maltesers, Bounty, Snickers, and Twix.
Salmonella is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract.
Symptoms typically include diarrhoea, stomach cramps and sometimes vomiting and fever.
Health advice states that it can take from 12 to 72 hours for the symptoms to develop.
Symptoms usually last for four to seven days and most people recover without treatment, according to the experts.
They warn that anyone who becomes seriously ill, may need hospital care because dehydration caused by the illness can be life-threatening.
