News of his unexpected passing  sent shock waves through the local community and beyond and has evoked a sense of profound loss.

Many tributes have been paid to him and there has been an outpouring of support and sympathy for his family.

A highly popular individual and family man, he served as a member of Donegal County Council for many years and was also on the now defunct Letterkenny Town Council. Indeed, he served as the town mayor.

He came from a strong political background and his late father, James Larkin, was a senator and a leading figure in Independent Fianna Fáil.

Dessie Larkin became one of Fianna Fáil’s highest profile public representatives in the county.

Mr. Larkin was the youngest ever chairperson elected to Donegal VEC, and served on numerous committees.

From Letterkenny, he was a past pupil of St. Eunan’s College.

For many years he worked with the American firm, Unifi.

He also worked as Town Centre manager in Letterkenny and was a great supporter of initiatives to improve the town and his beloved county, and was a keen promoter of community events.

In recent years, he ran a pub in the Oldtown area of Letterkenny, and was also involved in administration work with Donegal Co. Council.

He has been living for the past few years in Doon, Glebe, New Mills.

Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Mary, four children, his family and many friends.

Family flowers only. Donations, if wished to Pieta House C/O Pascal Blake, Funeral Directors, Stoney Arch, New Line Road, Letterkenny.
