Met Éireann has now issued Donegal with a status orange weather warning for snow and ice.

The warning also covers counties Cavan, Monaghan, Longford, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

Met Éireann said snow showers will occur this evening, tonight and during Friday. Accumulations of 4 to 8 cm expected, with the larger values on high ground. As a result people are also advised to be careful on icy roads and footpaths.

The warning was released this evening after 4pm and is valid until tomorrow, Friday 8 December, at 6pm.

A yellow status weather warning for snow and ice has also been announced across the North of Ireland.
