The Government should extend the scheme that enables local authority tenants to buy out their homes from their local council, according to Letterkenny Cllr. Gerry McMonagle.
Cllr. McMonagle said that the scheme had been “fairly popular in the past”. He pointed out that the proceeds from the sale of council houses provides capital funding for the council while it also removes the maintenance demand on the local authority. In effect, it’s a win, win situation as the tenant gets to own their home, while the council gets paid and when the property is bought the council is no longer responsible for maintenance.
He has called on Letterkenny Town Council to write to the Minister of State for Housing Jan O’Sullivan “to seriously consider reintroducing the scheme.”
Other councillors backed his motion at the April meeting of Letterkenny Town Council.
