Taoiseach Enda Kenny is in Washington today for the traditional festivities to mark St Patrick's Day.
Mr Kenny will hold a meeting with US President Barack Obama and later present him with a bowl of shamrock at a reception at the White House.
US Vice President Joe Biden will begin today's proceedings with a breakfast reception at his residence.
It is Mr Obama's last St Patrick's Day as US President, and, depending on government formation talks, it could also be Mr Kenny's last as Taoiseach.
The traditional Speaker's Lunch to mark St Patrick's Day was started in 1983 by then President Ronald Reagan and Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill.
It will be hosted for the first time today by Congressman Paul Ryan.
Later in the day, Mr Kenny will present Mr Obama with the traditional crystal bowl of shamrock during a special reception for Irish and Irish-Americans at the White House.
Mr Kenny will leave the US later tonight, returning to Ireland for a short time tomorrow before travelling onto to Brussels for a European Council meeting on St Patrick's Day.
