Around 10,000 properties were without electricity in Donegal this morning as the county was hit by the first big winter storm of the year.

THE bulk of the properties affected were in the Derrybeg and Gweedore area with the remainder in Stranorlar.

ESB Network crews are hoping to have all supplies restored by this evening.

The storm, dubbed Raging Rachael, has led to Met Eireann issuing a status red weather warning for a number of counties including Donegal.

With heavy rain coming after a spell that has seen yesterday's blanket of snow melting, one of the biggest problems now is localised flooding.

Motorists are being advised to take extra care on the roads, with fallen trees being one danger.

Gusts of wind over 110kph will continue for the morning in many coastal and upland areas.

The Harry Blaney Bridge in Fanad has been closed as a precautionary measure.

Numerous schools will be shut today.
