Over 120,000 people are eligible to vote in Donegal today as voters go to the polls in the local and European elections.
Yesterday voters on five islands off the Donegal coast cast their votes.
But for the bulk of people today is when they get the opportunity to cast their vote. Polling stations are open from 7.00 am – 10.00 pm.
There are 83 candidates contesting the Donegal Co. Council elections with the county being divided into five electoral areas – Letterkenny, Inishowen, Stranorlar, Donegal and Glenties.
While the county’s four town councils – in Letterkenny, Buncrana, Ballyshannon and Bundoran – are being abolished, the county council is being expanded by seven seats to 37.
Meanwhile, voters have 14 candidates to choose from in the Midlands-North West European constituency where there are four seats up for grabs.
The turnout at 1.00 pm was over 12% in some booths, suggesting that it could be higher than in 2009.
