The performance of independent John O'Donnell is the big story in the Letterkenny Electoral Area.
According to the tally figures he has got 1,6241 votes, just behind Ciaran Brogan 1,660 and Liam Blaney (1,724) with all but one box tallied. The untallied box is at the Errigal College in Letterkenny.
Fianna Fail looks set to retain three seats in this expanded ten seat constituency.
Sinn Fein will double its representation to two, with Gerry McMonagle expected to be elected along with outgoing Cllr. Mick Quinn.
Fine Gael will certainly retain one seat but there is little between Jimmy Kavanagh and outgoing Cllr. Noel McBride.
Party sources say there is an outside chance that they could get a second seat but it will all depend on transfers.
Independents Michael McBride and Ian McGarvey - the oldest councillor in the country - look safe.
The final few seats will be fought out between Independents Dessie Shiels and Donal Cullen and one of the Fine Gael candidates.
John O'Donnell is a son of the late Eddie O'Donnell, a former Chairman of Donegal Co. Council.
