Independent candidate John O'Donnell was elected on the second count in the Letterkenny Electoral Area.
He came in second behind Liam Blaney (FF).
O'Donnell got 1,692 first preference votes and was elected on the fourth count.
A son of the late Eddie O'Donnell (a former chairman of Donegal Co. Council) and Ann O'Donnell (who was co-opted onto the council after his father's untimely death), he has pledged to be a strong independent voice.
And O'Donnell supporters are already talking about him contesting the next general election.
