RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta presenter Damien Ó Dónaill has been shortlisted for the Réalta Óg na Bliana title, the Oireachtas Rising Star of the Year 2018 award, announced on Tuesday.
Damien Ó Dónaill is from Rann na Feirste in Donegal, and has been working with the national Irish-language broadcaster in their Doirí Beaga studios for the last four years.
He first came to the attention of station management when he won a GAA commentary competition at the station in 2013. He subsequently got a position with the station in 2014, and has been there since. He works predominantly in news and sport. He recently commentated on his first All-Ireland final, and earlier this summer he spent a few glorious sunny days in Ballyliffin reporting on the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.
Damien also heads up the selection committee for the annual Séamus Mac Géidigh award, set up to honour the memory of his mentor and former manager of the Donegal station Séamus Mac Géidigh who passed away suddenly in 2016.
The winner of the Réalta Óg award is decided by a public vote, and listeners can vote for Damien by texting GRADAM102 to 57003 from the Republic of Ireland or 60999 from the North and Great Britain.
The winners will be announced at the Oireachtas festival in Killarney on 31 October.
