Finn Harps suffered a heavy defeat against great rivals Derry City in the north-west derby at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium on Friday evening.

Ciaron Harkin bagged a hat-trick for the Declan Devine managed side.

If finished: Derry City 4, Finn Harps 0.

This defeat means that Harps return to the bottom of the Airtricity League Premier Division as UCD, who lost 1-0 away to Waterford, are back above the Donegal side on goal difference.

City led 2-0 at the end of an eventful first half.

City began well and Josh Kerr and Gerardo Bruna went close early on before Harps’ first big chance which saw a Daniel O’Reilly effort being cleared away off the line by Eoin Toil after good work by Tony McNamee.

The lively Caolan McAleer was had a chance for the Donegal side before the Candystripes were awarded a penalty on 31 minutes after David Parkhouse was fouled by Daniel O’Reilly and although Peter Burke saved Junior Ogedi- Uzokwe’s spot-kick the striker followed up to stab home the loose ball.

And Ogedi-Uzokwe (known as Junior) then had a goal disallowed before Derry got a second on 44 minutes with a cracking free from Ciaron Harkin.

Both Keith Cowan and Raffaele Cretaro were booked for Harps in the first half.

City had a couple of chances before ensuring the points with a third goal from Harkin on 67 minutes with a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Harkin got his third and City's fourth in stoppage time.
