Cockhill Celtic Youths had to draw on all their battling qualities to claim the Fr O’Gara Cup on penalties in a real thriller of a final on Saturday night.

Moville Celtic’s second string had the better of the opening half and deservedly went in 2-1 up at the break but the game swung in Cockhill’s favour in the second half as they pinned the Foylesiders back for long periods.

Despite that fact, Moville still led 3-2 with 10 minutes remaining as Kevin McDermott completed his hat trick and they were defending well until Martin Donaghey got on the end of a Daniel Doherty freekick to send the game to extra time.

In the shootout, penalty save specialist Lee McCarron saved Moville’s opening and third spot kicks while Cockhill converted their first four with Dean McDermott stroking home the deciding kick for a win that they deserved on the balance of play.
