A Donegal senator is celebrating after winning a gold medal at the North & Central American and Caribbean World Masters Athletics (NCCWMA) Regional Championships in Toronto, Canada.

Senator Brian O'Domhnaill was first in his age category and fifth in the 10,000 metres walk.

Expressing his delight on social media, he posted: "Thrilled to win Gold in my age category and obtain a 5th place overall."

He continued: "Hard work pays off and days like this make all the sacrifices and early morning / late evening training worthwhile. Thank you to everyone who has sent me messages and good luck wishes - it is greatly appreciated."

He clocked a fine 51.23, which was all the more admirable considering he had just arrived Dublin late the night before and had to contend with high temperatures and high humidity in Toronto.

He added: "I am pretty pleased with the outcome and grateful for the opportunity of being able to compete. Ultimately in a major championship race, it’s always brilliant to be on the podium."

Sen. O'Domhnaill has family in the area so that made the success all the better.
