Greencastle Ladies are the Foyle Cup champions for 2014 as a late strike from striker Aisling McDermott earned them a narrow 1-0 win over Northern Ireland Championship side Sion Swifts at Wilton Park on Friday night.

In a tense decider where chances were at a premium, Greencastle were dealt a double blow early in the game when the key pair of Charmaine McDermott and Gemma McGuinness were forced to come off with knocks picked up earlier in the tournament.

Paddy Hannon's girls had to weather significant pressure from the crack Tyrone side in the second half but they defended heroically before McDermott nipped in behind the Swifts defence and produced a sublime finish from the edge of the box with just six minutes remaining.

The Foyle Cup was the one piece of silverware missing from the Ballybrack girls heaving trophy cabinet after they completed a domestic treble in Inishowen and Donegal last summer.
