Glengad United completed the most successful season in the club’s history with a remarkable fourth cup win on Saturday but they had to survive attacking onslaughts at the start of each half before securing a 4-2 victory over Clonmany Shamrocks in the Charlie O’Donnell Memorial Cup decider.
Clonmany were rank outsiders coming into the final against Inishowen’s cup specialists but they clearly hadn’t read the script as they flew out of the blocks to dominate the opening quarter of the game to race into a 2-1 lead.
The Crua side settled into their passing game to take a 3-2 lead before the break but Clonmany again started the second half at a high tempo and had their chances to level the scores before Terence Doherty gave United a two goal cushion against the run of play.
The Shamrocks were dealt fresh hope when Glengad centrehalf Ruairi Doherty saw red for a second booking with a full half an hour left to play but with two goal Man of the Match John G McLaughlin filling in at centrehalf they retained possession well to claim yet another piece of silverware.
