The most challenging windsurfing contest of all time came to Donegal this weekend.

The Red Bull Storm Chase 2019 hit the north-west.

Mobile and reactive, the competitors and contest team have been waiting for a Force 10 storm to hit the Northern Hemisphere in a viable location for a windsurfing competition.

And the competitors, crew and safety teams were on standby as a series of storms have been heading towards the Irish coast.

Today the  hugely talented competitors took to the seas off Magheraroarty -  these stunning photos will leave you breathless.

Red Bull Storm Chase is a windsurf contest unlike any other in the world. Restricted to neither time nor place, the contest only happens when a suitable storm develops, with enough advance warning for the riders and crew to get to safe location to hold the contest as the storm strikes.

When the perfect storm arrives, up to eight riders – four finalists from the last Red Bull Storm Chase, and four riders selected for this year – mobilize to the event location. On site, the judges will determine the best multi-heat format for competition, with a keen eye towards safety. They are given points for height, style, creativity, wave size, and more as they determine who is the best storm sailor on the planet. The competition takes place over two days as conditions permit.

This was a promotional video produced in advance.
