Three second half goals in the space of ten minutes earned Letterkenny Rovers the Ulster Youth Cup at Aileach on Saturday afternoon but they had to dig deep to see off a well organised Cockhill Celtic side who would have fancied their chances of an upset had they score first.
In fact, but for some excellent shot stopping from Jason Quinn in the Rovers goal, the Inishowen side could have had a half time lead as striker Mark Coyle twice forced full stretch saves from the club’s senior ‘keeper.
Letterkenny were more penetrative in the final third however and the introduction of Simon McGlynn on the right flank for the second half had a significant impact as he set up two and scored one in the purple patch that decided the game.
It was a stunning long range effort from Ireland underage international midfielder Gareth Doherty that broke the deadlock on the hour and, after McGlynn had doubled their lead, his cross was turned into his own net by a Cockhill defender to effectively end the game as a contest with 13 minutes remaining.
Final score – Letterkenny Rovers 3 Cockhill Celtic 0
