The one thing that is guaranteed when you sit down with Neil McGee is that you’ll get an honesty opinion.

It can be blunt but it’s always to the point. And when you press him on what conclusions if any, can be drawn at this stage of the season, the answer is more or less none.

League form, scoring averages, favourite tags… all that, he says, goes out the window come Championship.  The simple and obvious example he offers up is Donegal’s League campaign in 2012.

In the same season Jim McGuinness led Donegal to a glorious Ulster and All Ireland double, the side’s previous form in Division 1 of the NFL left plenty to be desired.

A scrappy three-point home win over Armagh in their final outing only just preserved their place in the division. Defeats to Down, Laois, Dublin as well as an 11-point pummeling at the hands of Kerry were soon forgotten about once Donegal started to gain some traction in Championship.
